Most aquarists don’t name their fish mainly because it’s difficult to tell one from another.
But if you have a Betta, things are a lot easier: since you can’t keep more than one Betta in the same tank, you can definitely name your fish pet.
But sometimes, finding the right name for your Betta fish could be difficult – I know I generally struggle to find a creative name if I don’t have a lot of time to think about it. And even then, I rarely come up with a good one.

How to choose the perfect name for your Betta Fish?
Basically, any name out there would be a good fit for your betta. When deciding upon the name for your pet, think of any of the following:
- favorite actors: any name could work, but those that you can turn into fish/water puns are better (Like Betta White recommended above)
- favorite characters: it doesn’t matter if they’re from movies, cartoons, anime or books, there are tons of characters out there that you love and could use as inspiration when naming your betta fish.
- favorite bands/musicians: or even songs. Do you like Ram Jam’s Black Betty? Well, Black Betta it is, then!
- food names: for some reason, these work great with Bettas.
What I would NOT recommend doing – especially if you’re naming a betta with your children (or buy them one) is to name them after a family member.
Bettas don’t live that long and them passing away would make things really weird for kids (and adults alike). Yes, they’re one of the easiest fish to care for, but not immortal, unfortunately.
